Thinking About Transferring From One UC to Another? Watch This First

UC-to-UC transfers get almost no attention compared to community college transfers. What to know before you start, from someone who's done it.

Most transfer guidance focuses on getting into a UC from a community college, but a smaller, less-discussed path exists too: transferring from one UC campus to a different UC campus. If you're considering it, one of the most useful things you can do before you start the paperwork is hear directly from someone who's actually done it.

Content creator Olivia Simone (channel infinitelycindy) shares exactly that in her video "4 Tips For Transferring from a UC to another UC! (Personal Experience from UCSD to UCLA)", drawn from her own experience transferring from UC San Diego to UCLA.

This is one student's personal account and opinion, not official UC guidance, so treat it as a useful real-world perspective to weigh alongside your own research, not as a substitute for your target campus's official transfer requirements.

What to Know Before You Start a UC-to-UC Transfer

A few general points worth keeping in mind as you research this path further:

  • Transferring between two UC campuses still means submitting a full new UC application through the regular UC application system - there's no shortcut process just because you're already enrolled at a UC.
  • The Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) program is only available to community college transfer applicants, not to students already enrolled at another UC campus, so a UC-to-UC transfer generally goes through the standard admissions review instead.
  • Your UC coursework will need to satisfy your new target campus's general education and major prerequisite requirements, the same way a community college course would, so it's worth checking ASSIST.org or your target campus's articulation resources for how your specific UC courses will transfer.
  • Reasons students pursue a UC-to-UC transfer vary widely: a specific major offered at one campus and not another, proximity to family, campus culture and size, or a research opportunity only available at the new campus. Get clear on your own reason before you start, since you'll likely need to explain it in your application.

If you're preparing your own UC-to-UC transfer application and want a second, expert set of eyes on how you explain your reasons for transferring, SummaEssay's editors work with UC transfer applicants on exactly this kind of application narrative.
