Before

The draft as it arrived.

Thanks to my life experience, education background, challenges I encountered and especially my family for inspiring and encouraging me to pursue a graduate degree abroad.

Education Background

I led a tough high school life because of my poor academic performance. I used to wonder why I could not catch up with other classmates. Fortunately, I overcame this problem in my senior year. I started studying with a few of my good friends instead of struggling with the abstruse course materials by myself; specifically, we discussed the materials and solved the questions together, which greatly improved my grades. After the college entrance exam, I got the admission to the Department of Atmosphere at *****. During my freshman year, I visited a number of exhibitions related to machine tool design and innovative robot design. I was impressed by these compelling mechanical engineering applications beneficial to humanity, which motivated me to transfer my major to mechanical engineering.

In my junior year, my outstanding academic performance qualified me for exchanging to ***** University in Singapore. I participated in the cutting-edge research project and collaborated with lab members from various countries, an experience confirms my preparation for the challenge of graduate studies in a foreign country.

Life Experience

I was fortunate to be born in a family with open-minded parents so that I could access to a variety of knowledge including my profession knowledge and diverse culture; thus, I could keep absorbing up-to-date conception. My father is a businessman, providing me opportunities to meet people from other countries such as United States, Japan, China or Vietnam. These experiences left me anticipating interacting with people from every corner in this global village. On the other hand, my sister has exchanged to several countries since she attended university. She brought a lot of interesting thinking and anecdotes from her experience. She also shared with us how she overcame the cultural shock and how she interacted with people from different cultural background. Motivated by my father and sister, I aspire to study abroad to broaden my horizons.

As the first step to experience cultural diversity, I participated in a summer program, Volunteers in Asia American Language and Culture (ALC), which provided me an opportunity to live with Japanese and Korean. I pretty enjoyed making friends with people from different culture. In addition, I also appreciated the American cultural I experienced. In this program, I had a chance to visit *****, and I was impressed by the liberal atmosphere, beautiful campus and vigorous student activities. From then on, I firmly decided that I will spare no effort to get the admission to *****.

Service Experiences

I grew up in a rural town, where is full of human interest. Neighbors are willing to help those who are in need. I also picked up this concept. I spent my spare time as a volunteer on tutoring primary students who have less resource to access to higher education. In addition, I was honored as a learning partner from Dean's List to help my classmates who have difficulties in learning.

“When one teaches, two learn” is the reason why I always enjoy assisting other people. Through teaching, I could not only refine my understanding of what I learned but also improve my interpersonal and communication skills.

My goal is to apply my professional knowledge to advance technologies assisting people. I believe that pursuing a graduate degree will be my corner stone for improving my professional knowledge and skills necessary to accomplish my goal. I sincerely appreciate your consideration.

After

The version that went out.

I was raised in the rural town of ******** in Taiwan, a place where our greatest goal was to help neighbors in need. Volunteering to tutor primary students that did not have access to higher education gave me great satisfaction, as did helping my classmates with learning difficulties as part of the Dean’s List learning partnership program.

Even now, I still maintain these values, which is why I am seeking a doctoral degree in mechanical engineering. This field has the potential to blend breakthroughs in physics and materials science to make advances in such diverse fields as medicine, transportation and robotics that will transform people’s lives.

Mechanical engineering has become so complex that this field has become even more international in recent years, which is why I am seeking a degree abroad at an elite institution like the *****. ***** world-renowned faculty, cutting-edge resources, and international student body will provide me with the foundational skills to achieve my career objectives.

Even though I was born and raised in Taiwan – I already have an international perspective. My father is a businessman, and introduced me to clients from such diverse countries as the United States, Japan, China and Vietnam. These experiences made me realize that we are all part of the "global village". My sister also inspired me as she was involved in several exchange programs while attending her undergraduate program. She impressed upon me the importance of understanding different cultures to improve my interpersonal skills, as well as to learn about the latest advances in my profession from other countries.

These experiences encouraged me to participate in a summer program, Volunteers in Asia American Language and Culture (ALC), which provided me an opportunity to live with Japanese and South Korean students. This program also gave me an opportunity to visit the **** campus, which impressed me with its liberal atmosphere, beautiful campus, and numerous student activities.

During my junior year, my outstanding academic performance qualified me for an exchange program to ***** University in Singapore. This gave me an opportunity to experience yet another culture, while participating in a cutting-edge research project where I collaborated with lab partners from other countries.

Although I am academically successful, this has not always been the case. Initially, I struggled in high school attempting to learn the materials on my own. Then I discovered the power of working in groups to absorb material and soon became successful having gained admission to the Department of Atmosphere at ***** University.

During my freshman year, I visited a number of exhibitions related to machine tool design and innovative robotics designs. It made me realize my life’s passion – to learn about mechanical engineering, and to begin my career in an international environment. The ***** campus is the perfect environment to gain this knowledge that will become the cornerstone of my professional career dedicated to using mechanical engineering to improve society.

Editor’s critique

The letter that came back with the edit.

Hello,

Thank you for sharing this intriguing statement of purpose and allowing me to offer revisions and some suggestions for improvement. Oftentimes when looking at an SOP or similar essay for graduate school, I anticipate that the admissions committee will be expecting the candidate to address five primary topics:

How did you become interested in this field?

What experiences have contributed toward your preparation for further study?

What are your future goals?

What are your research interests?

How are you a "match" for the program to which you are applying?

I can see you have covered points #1 and 2 quite well, as you’ve discussed your academic training and internships. You do touch on the other points but I’d suggest they could be just a bit stronger, especially when it comes to your future goals and your reasoning for applying for this particular school.

You could probably free up some space by trimming or summarizing in places where you’ve got quite a bit of exposition currently. Going on at length about why you love statistics and how it's something you've always dreamed of is not really appropriate for a graduate school essay. Since you've already majored in this as an undergraduate it should be understood that this is your field of interest. Now, the question is what do you want to do with it and more importantly why is a master's degree an important step for you to advance in this field? The emphasis should be on what you intend to accomplish.

It's good to highlight why you are well prepared for the program, insofar as you can assure the admissions committee that you were able to handle the tools of their trade and can keep up with your peers. However, I'd suggest not to go into too much extended detail on information that can be easily found on your resume or in your transcript. Offering the highlights is key here.

Since you’ve already had professional exposure in an attractive field you’ll probably want to address the unstated question of why don’t you just go ahead and find a job in this field rather than going to school. After reading through the whole essay, I get a sense that it might be more attractive for you to gain more exposure to theory and cutting-edge knowledge in this field. If so, I’d recommend you highlight this and explain why XXX University *in particular* will give you that knowledge.

It would also be good to connect this with a tangible goal after graduation. As a statistician, which new ideas or practices do you hope to contribute to your field of work or study? Are there things in the field that you hope to change? Given your ultimate goal of starting your own futures company, what professional path do you envision to get there? And again it would be a good idea to tailor this to the specific university to which you’re applying, its geographical location, specific class project and internship opportunities you anticipate, and so on.

I hope these revisions and suggestions are helpful, and I’ll be standing by for your next editing round!
